One Star fish at a time

one starfish at a timeWhat's all this talk about Starfish at Castaway Kids?   one starfish at a time

I hadn't run into this story before and I came upon it in a wonderful book, “Half the Sky– Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide”, and it seemed so relevant to what our organization is doing:

A man goes on the beach and sees that it is covered with starfish that have washed up in the tide.  A little boy is walking along, picking them up and throwing them back into the water.   “What are you doing, son?” the man asks.

“You see how many starfish there are?  You'll never make a difference.”

The boy paused thoughtfully and picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean.  “It sure made a difference to that one,” he said.

Many folks use the large numbers as an excuse to do nothing, but that's not our way at Castaway Kids, we just keep plugging along, trying to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors, or our students–  “one starfish at a time”.

We even started a new Hi 5, open handed, so it looks like a starfish.  So, if you see a couple people giving an open Hi 5, think starfish– think, you can make a difference!
